5 AC Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool

When the summer heat rolls in, keeping your home cool becomes a top priority. Air conditioners (ACs) are a big help, but if you don’t use them the right way, they can waste energy and still leave you sweating.

The good news is that a few simple tips can help your AC work better and keep your home cooler without using too much electricity. In this post, we’ll go over five helpful tips that can make a big difference during those hot days.

1. Clean or Replace Your Air Filter

The air filter in your AC might seem small, but it plays a huge role. Over time, it gets full of dust and dirt. When that happens, the AC has to work harder to push air through, which uses more energy and cools less.

That’s why it’s important to check your filter every month. If it looks dirty, clean it or replace it. Most filters need to be replaced every one to three months. A clean filter helps improve home cooling and keeps the air fresher too.

2. Keep Doors and Windows Closed

This may sound obvious, but sometimes we forget. If doors or windows are open, hot air comes in and cool air escapes. That makes the AC work much harder. Make sure all windows are closed tightly, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

You can also check if your doors and windows have gaps. If they do, try using weather stripping or sealing tape to close them. This keeps the cool air inside and the heat outside.

3. Use Curtains or Blinds

Sunlight coming through the windows can make your house really warm. That’s why it helps to close the curtains or blinds during the day. Dark-colored or thick curtains work best, especially on windows that face the sun.

If you want to let in some light, you can open them during the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or evening. Blocking direct sunlight helps keep your home cooler and your AC doesn’t have to work as hard.

4. Set Your Thermostat the Right Way

It’s tempting to turn your AC way down when it’s super hot outside, but that doesn’t cool your home faster. It just makes your AC run longer and use more energy. A good setting for most homes is around 24°C to 26°C (75°F to 78°F).

If you’re not home during the day, raise the temperature a bit to save energy. You can also get a programmable thermostat that changes the temperature automatically.

5. Get Regular AC Maintenance

Just like a car, your AC needs regular check-ups. At least once a year, have a professional look at it. They can clean the parts inside, check for leaks, and make sure everything is working properly.

If your AC is older or making strange noises, it might be time for a bigger repair or even a new unit. Taking care of your AC means it’ll last longer and work better all summer long.

Conclusion

Keeping your home cool doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. By cleaning the filter, sealing windows, using curtains, setting your thermostat wisely, and keeping your AC maintained, you can stay comfortable even during the hottest days.

These small changes can make a big difference in how well your AC works and how much you pay for electricity. Try out these tips and enjoy a cooler, more relaxing home this summer.
